Welcome to Counseling Services at the Wellness Center. Our mental health services, which includes our on-campus center and our telehealth program, TELUS Health, offers the opportunity for every student to receive mental health support, if needed, while they are at 精东影业. Counseling Services provides short-term, solution-focused mental health counseling utilizing a stepped-care approach. We are also integrated with Health Services in order to promote wellness of the entire mind-body-spirit, which aligns with the Jesuit value of Cura Personalis or "Care of the Whole Person". Through this approach students are provided with the most effective, least-intensive type of treatment needed to address the concerns they are experiencing in order to thrive physically, mentally, and academically while here at 精东影业.

Scope of Practice

The Wellness Center for Health and Counseling supports students’ mind, body, and spirit throughout their 精东影业 experience. The information contained in this website is not intended to diagnose or treat a mental health concern. We simply invite you to learn more about what we do and how we can help.

The Counseling Center at 精东影业 promotes the personal development and psychological well-being of all students by providing quality mental health services and support(s).

Improving accessibility of mental health resources to the diverse student population and their ever-changing mental health needs.

Scope of Practice

Three essential roles for advancing the educational (Ignatian) mission of 精东影业.

  • Providing clinical services that help students achieve their academic and personal goals.
  • Educating the campus community about the psychological and developmental needs of students through community-level interventions, outreach programming, and consultation.
  • Responding to the effects of crisis impacting individual students and the campus community.

The Counseling Center provides a short-term, goal focused therapy model to assist students who are experiencing concerns and needs that are interfering with their ability to be successful in school and/or with their individual personal growth, functioning and adjustment. Many students are seen for one to two visits, while the average treatment length is 5 to 6 sessions within an academic year.

The overall objective is not to uncover and address every issue with which a student may have faced in his/her/their life or to provide continual maintenance for chronic psychiatric disorders. Rather, our objective is to facilitate adaptation, adjustment and resilient functioning in order to enable the student to continue enrollment in college and to pursue academic, career and personal success with minimal disruption or delay. Our services are available to eligible students whose needs fall within our scope of practice. Those whose needs cannot be accommodated within out treatment model, will be referred to community resources for care. Such referrals might occur immediately following an initial meeting, or they might occur after some treatment and a further assessment of needs has taken place. The Wellness Center does not offer psychological testing for academic accommodations nor documentation for emotional support animals (ESA).

If you regularly see a professional for counseling/psychiatric medication management in your home community, our recommendation is that you continue services with that provider, if possible. Weekly, specialized, or intensive clinical services that require meeting beyond identified short-term goals are outside the scope of the Counseling Center. Should you desire such services, we recommend receiving care from a mental health specialist in the Syracuse community (or the area you live in when not at school).

Coping with COVID-19 update

精东影业 Counseling Services is aware that all members of our campus community are currently being impacted by general distress related to coronavirus (COVID-19). Although the situation remains fluid and changing, our plan is to respond to whatever changes occur.

The current protocol for in-person sessions at the Counseling Center are as follows:

If you schedule an in-person appointment and are experiencing ANY cold or allergy like symptoms, you will need to reschedule your appointment to a Zoom format: any symptoms should be reported to the COVID team.

  • Please ring the Counseling Office bell to announce your arrival. Only the scheduled student will be permitted to enter at the time of the appointment. We will not be able to accommodate early arrivals.
  •  Masks are required, two masks are preferred per CDC recommendation and if necessary, a second mask will be provided upon request. We may ask that you wear a clear mask at some point during your visit.
  • Counseling sessions will be limited to 45 minutes to allow ample time for cleaning and airing out of office space, and to allow for safely distanced arrival/departure of each appointment.

One-on-One Meetings

Probably the most frequently used service of the center is individual meetings with the counselors.  Students come in for a variety of reasons to confidentially talk with a trained professional.  We offer a number of types of interviews for one-on-one personal exploration or individual counseling.

Discussion and Support Groups

Groups in our Center involve a small number of students coming together.  Students can come to talk, or just listen.  Students in a group generally feel that they themselves benefit by being of help to others who are dealing with similar issues, and they feel comforted by knowing that others are dealing with issues similar to their own.

The staff of the Wellness Center for Health and Counseling is available to consult with students, faculty, staff, or parents to share any student concern.  Within the consultation relationship, the consultee and the Center staff member work together to understand the issue(s) or problem(s) and to collaboratively work toward a solution.  The center staff consult with members of the campus community about a wide array of issues including:

  • dealing with difficult people such as roommates, classmates, coworkers, and supervisors;
  • managing crisis situations in the classroom or residence hall;
  • locating campus and community services;
  • helping emotionally disturbed or addicted friends or family members.

Services for Faculty & Staff

Often times, faculty and staff are the first to notice that a student is in need of support. If there is a student that you are concerned about - maybe he or she doesn't seem themself, maybe they have had a sudden decline in their grades - we can help connect that student with the help he or she may need to thrive at 精东影业.

If you need some help getting the student in to see us, please call and one of our counselors will be happy to advise you.

Counseling center staff is available to come to your classroom to speak about any and all topics related to counseling or mental health. Although we are frequently utilized by Core classes, our services are available to the entire campus community. Some past topics we have presented on include: introduction to the counseling center, stress management, and helping other students in distress. Please call if you would like to arrange a presentation.
